Dietary guidelines battle reignited by conference panel snub

When the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were issued in January, bitter debates over the role of meat in a healthy diet were expected to take a break, at least until drafting the 2020 guidelines begins.

Less than three months after the 2015 guidelines came out, however, the debate has reentered the public stage. On Tuesday, The Nutrition Coalition, an independent group self-described as “dedicated to ensuring that nutrition policy is based on rigorous science,” will hold a news conference.

The catalyst: science journalist Nina Teicholz (author of international best-seller, The Big Fat Surprise), was invited to present the ideas from her book at this week's National Food Policy Conference then in recent weeks disinvited after the other panelists reportedly refused to speak on the same panel with her.
